Reusable Nappies Reusable Nappy FAQ

When can I start using reusable nappies?

You can start using reusable nappies as soon as your baby is born! Reusable nappies come in a variety of shapes and sizes so look for the ones that state they are suitable for new-borns. It’s also never too late to switch while you are still using nappies.

What size reusable nappies do I need?

Most reusable nappy retailers will include a size guide on their website which you may find useful. Reusable nappies tend to either be ‘new-born’ size or ‘birth to potty’ size. Birth-to-potty nappies are sometimes also referred to as ‘one-size nappies’. New-born nappies are the appropriate size for new-borns, once they begin to grow out of this size you will need some birth to potty nappies instead. Birth-to-potty nappies are adjustable and can take your child up to about 2 years old.

How do I care for reusable nappies?

See our reusable nappy care information page.

How do I fasten them? Do I need pins?

Again, this depends on the brand, the majority of the ready to use nappies will use poppers or Velcro. However, when using flat nappies it is common to use nappy fasteners such as nappy nippers, which mean that you do not have to use pins. These are widely available from retailers.

Are they expensive?

Reusable nappies are more expensive per nappy than disposable equivalents. However, as they can be washed and reused over the nappy wearing period of a baby, they work out much more cost effective.

The cost of usage can vary depending on washing and drying. It will be most cost effective and better for the environment to airdry nappies rather than using a tumble drier. It also reduces laundry costs to wash nappies in full loads rather than washing nappies separately.

Is there a way to try before buying?

Yes, you can try nappies from organisations such as the Leicester Nappy Library, where advisors can talk you through the options and lend you some kits to try.
