Accessibility Statement

Leicestershire County Council on behalf of the Leicestershire Waste Partnership are committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

This accessibility statement applies to the Lesswaste.org.uk website

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances and the exemptions listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reason(s):

(a) non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

  • Navigation using a keyboard could be improved – Navigating between the latest news cards on our home page and on some in-page links can be difficult. This fails WCAG success criterion 4.7 Focus Visible
  • Reading order could be improved on some pages -for example on the volunteering page the right hand column is read out before the page content when using a screen reader. This fails WCAG success criterion 4.3 Focus order
  • When zooming to 200% some of the intro/help text isn’t displayed in the cards on the recycle page. This fails WCAG success criterion 4.4 Resize text. At 400% headings spill out of the cards and some of the table isn’t visible on the Compostable, degradable, biodegradable and oxo degradable plastics page.
  • Our website search function lacks a descriptive instruction to support the input of text into the search field. This fails WCAG success criterion 3.2 Labels or instructions
  • Some pages have insufficient colour contrast, for example pagination for posts within the news archive and the green text on some pages e.g. fly tipping if only. This fails WCAG success criterion 4.3 Contrast (Minimum)
  • Not all interactive components on our pages are large enough to be easily used by people with motor impairments. For example the checkboxes on our cookies policy page, the find us on Facebook button used on page footers, and the navigation buttons on our news archive pages are too small. These fail WCAG success criterion 5.5 Target Size (enhanced)
  • Error suggestion and prevention mechanisms are missing from some pages such as the search function and fields within forms. This fails WCAG success criteria 3.3 Error suggestion and 3.3.4 Error prevention (Legal, Financial, Data)
  • Some controls are not use consistently throughout the website, for example in-page links on pages are sometimes represented as bold links and some as normal text. This fails WCAG success criterion 2.4 Consistent identification.
  • Some iframes don’t have a title, for example the video on Leicestershire community kitchens page. This fails WCAG criterion 1.2 Name, Role, Value.

We are exploring fixes with our developer and hope to implement these as soon as possible.

PDFs and other documents

Some of our older PDFs and Word documents may not meet accessibility standards. For example; they may not be structured so that they’re accessible to a screen reader.

The accessibility regulations don’t require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services.

Any new PDFs or Word documents we publish, do meet accessibility standards.

Embedded third party content

The google maps on our events listings pages don’t always have an aria role description.

These maps are third party content and are out of our control.

Preparation of this accessibility statement

This statement was prepared on 15 February 2024.

This website was last fully tested from 13 – 14 February 2024. We did our own testing using the Silktide website quality management platform. Tests incorporated a combination of automated and manual tests such as navigating using a keyboard and different zoom settings and screen sizes.

Most pages were tested and included the wide range of functionality on the website including the home page, landing pages, content pages and events.
