A wide range of different salad leaves are readily available in UK supermarkets,
e.g. watercress, rocket or beetroot leaves. Salad leaves are a great addition to
many meals as a side dish. They are also quite easy to grow yourself, so why not
give it a go and reduce your food footprint.

How to Store Bagged Salad

Store all varieties of salad leaves in the fridge in their original packaging,
or alternatively inside a loosely tied plastic bag.

You cannot freeze salad leaves.

Foods with high water content, like salad leaves, lettuce and cucumber,
do not freeze well.

Top Tips

Prepared salad leaves should be eaten by the use by date. It could be unsafe
to eat after, even if it has been stored correctly and looks and smells fine.

Also, bagged salad has a short ‘open life’ – the time you have to eat the food
once it’s been opened. The life can sometimes be extended by storing them with
a piece of kitchen paper to absorb moisture.

Make the Most of Your Salad

Salads are a perfect way to use up all sorts of small portions of leftovers
from all the main food groups, including fish, meat, dairy, eggs and grains.

Store cupboard essentials such as nuts, seeds, dried fruit or tinned goods
are great additions to salads.

Buying Tips

Buy the right size bag/pack for your needs. Salad bags have a use by date
for safety and very little time to use up the contents once opened.
Think about swapping bagged salad for a whole lettuce, which will last longer.
