Please don’t put any nappies in your recycling

June 22, 2026

Did you know that in just one 12-hour shift at the recycling facility, over 4,000 nappies are regularly pulled out of Leicestershire recycling? That’s more than 300 every hour!

Just one nappy alone can contaminate and spoil the whole lot of recycling. When nappies are spotted they have to be removed by hand, which is unpleasant and unhygienic for the member of staff, and it also slows down the sorting process. If the nappies are found to have spoilt other items then often the whole load can’t be recycled. This not only costs the council time and money, but it’s also a waste of recyclable materials.

Please place nappies in the general waste bin and not in the recycling.
