International Compost Awareness Week 4th-10th May

May 2, 2025

International Compost Awareness Week is held yearly in early May. The aim is to raise awareness of the benefits of composting and to encourage people to compost wherever they are in the world. This year’s theme is ‘Sustainable Communities begin with Composting’, which encourages people to consider the wider benefits of composting to the environment.

Composting is a simple and rewarding practice that anyone can start to reduce waste and also save money on purchasing compost. There are options to suit different levels and space available, enabling everyone to turn food and garden waste into nutrient-rich plant food for your garden, contributing to a more sustainable future through reduced carbon and methane emissions.

Composting at home reduces the need for transporting waste from both gardens and kitchens to a waste facility. This immediately reduces the carbon emissions associated with that transport and reduce the impact on the climate. Composting also provides a great environment for biodiversity; micro-organisms, worms, slugs and even bigger creatures such as frogs and slow worms.

Composting can be easy and inexpensive, with either a plastic “Dalek” style home compost bin or even a home made pallet bin. These cold composting systems handle a wide range of materials, from fruit and vegetable waste, teabags and coffee grounds to grass clippings and pruning’s. However, there are more advanced composting bins and systems that can be used to compost a wider range of materials, such as cooked food from the kitchen. If you want to find out more about what might best suit your composting needs then please check here.

So, if you need help getting started with your composting journey or you’ve encountered a problem, we have a range of options.
