Across Leicestershire, volunteer repair groups help people keep items in use for longer.

Volunteer and Community Repair Services

Repair cafés and community repair groups are run by volunteers from local voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations.

Their aim is to help people keep items in use for longer, share repair skills and prevent useful items from becoming waste.

Repairs are normally provided free of charge, although donations are often welcomed to help cover venue hire, insurance and equipment costs. If replacement parts are required, you will usually be asked to cover the cost of the parts.

Volunteer repairers work on a best-efforts basis. Some items may not be repairable due to safety concerns, lack of spare parts or the complexity of the fault. Although repairs cannot always be guaranteed, many items are successfully returned to use.

Before You Attend a Repair Café or Community Repair Event

• Check the organiser’s website or social media page for the latest event information.
• Check which items are accepted by your chosen repair group.
• Check whether you need to pre-register your repair. Advance notice can help organisers ensure the right volunteers, tools and spare parts are available.
• Bring any chargers, accessories or replacement parts if available.
• Back up personal data on electronic devices.
• Arrive in good time as sessions can be busy.
• Remember that volunteers work within their skills and may not be able to repair every item.
