Contamination at Recycling and Household Waste Sites

December 17, 2025

As with recycling bins at home, contamination causes a problem at our recycling and household waste sites. There are particular issues caused by batteries, gas bottles, asbestos, plasterboard, hazardous liquids and upholstered furniture going into the wrong containers. These can cause explosions and fires that pose a risk to the safety of our staff or delays in emptying bins that can then affect site capacity.

  • Batteries should always go in the designated container or, if they cannot be removed from the device, in the small electricals container.

  • Whenever possible, gas bottles should be returned to the manufacturer or the retailer where you bought them. If not, please always dispose of them separately at one of our recycling and household waste sites that can accept them and speak to site staff.

  • Asbestos can only be accepted at our Coalville, Kibworth, Mountsorrel and Whetstone sites with a permit, must be correctly wrapped and can only be placed in the designated container. Charges may apply.

  • Plasterboard must not be placed in general, bulky waste or hardcore containers and must only go in the designated container at our sites. Please ensure that all fixtures and fittings e.g. tiles or woodwork have been removed. Charges may apply

  • Hazardous liquids cannot be disposed of at our waste sites and instead must be taken – with a free permit – to Tradebe in Hinckley.

  • Upholstered furniture must not be disposed of in the general or bulky waste. If in a good condition, with a fire safety label attached, please take to the ReHome Zone at our waste sites; otherwise take to the designated container for disposal. Please speak to site staff.

Please remember to ensure that you put the correct items in the correct bins when you visit our sites and ask site staff for guidance if you’re ever in doubt.

Please note that sites are occasionally unable to accept some materials. Please always check here before visiting
