Foil in love with recycling
February 16, 2026

Every year, Britain gets through 425,000 miles of household foil – enough to take you around the world 17 times – and Leicestershire households use around 57 million foil trays: all of it can be recycled! Whether it’s from wrapping sandwiches, a ready meal, a pie, or a takeaway, just give it a rinse to remove any remaining food before recycling and scrunch smaller pieces together to form a tennis sized ball to make it easier to recycle.
Aluminium can be recycled endlessly without losing any quality and recycling it saves up to 95% of the energy and is 20 times more efficient than making it from the raw materials. An empty drink can you recycle today could be back on the supermarket shelf as a new can in as little as 60 days!
Don’t forget that empty aerosols from the kitchen and bathroom can also be recycled, along with any drinks cans, food tins and biscuit tins.
Recycled metals are used to produce all sorts of everyday items like irons, kettles and window frames, as well as more food tins and drinks cans.
Listen out for our new radio adverts and follow us on Facebook to find out more.
Let’s make the most of our metals and keep them in use by recycling them where we can.
