Recycling is Good But…..
July 12, 2024
Following some recent research on messaging, Keep Britain Tidy have developed some new graphics that better explain what we can do with the things we no longer want so we can work towards a circular economy.
In order to try to explain this they created the image below which shows the best thing to do at the top and the worst at the bottom.
As you can see, sending waste to landfill through putting rubbish in the bin remains the least desirable thing to do. This may be obvious to many, and we know that a lot of people are already trying to cut down putting things in the bin where possible. However, one thing that may surprise you is that recycling is only the level above! Recycling is better as it allows materials to be recovered and reused; however, this is often limited by technology. The options for what the recycled material can go on to become are sometimes not as abundant as we might think and not everything can be recycled so its’s simply not an option for all products. For these reasons, there are better actions that we can do with items that we own other than throwing them away or recycling them.
These better options include rehoming an item, continuing to use it, borrowing or renting something or swapping the way we shop which includes buying second-hand or simply not buying items in the first place. In order to give you some ideas of ways that you can easily incorporate some of these waste reducing behaviours we will be sharing information that gives simple ideas that you might want to try if you want to do better than just recycling.
We are sharing more information on what you can do to make a difference on Facebook.
