An innovative recycling and composting plant, known as a Mechanical and Biological Treatment (MBT) facility, will reduce the amount of waste Leicestershire sends to landfill.
The plant will be able to process up to 50,000 tonnes of rubbish per year which cannot be separated for recycling by householders.
During the treatment, any further waste that can be recycled is taken out and then most of the natural material – such as paper and food scraps - is composted in an enclosed environment.
The end product can be used as a soil improver or to restore the former landfill site. The small amount of remaining waste that cannot be used in this way will be landfilled.
The new facility is being built by Lafarge Aggregates Ltd at Cotesbach, near Lutterworth. It will use proven technology developed by New Earth Solutions Ltd.
