Strategy Review

The Leicestershire Waste Partnership is reviewing its waste strategy.

The document is a fundamental part of Leicestershire’s approach to sustainable waste management, setting out the key objectives and policies that guide the development of services in Leicestershire.

All Leicestershire authorities are signatories to the strategy, which in line with Defra guidance, is now due for review. This will help to ensure that it remains fit for purpose and relevant in today’s ever changing environmental and economic climate.

The strategy was last reviewed in 2006, establishing a number of challenging recycling and composting targets. So far all of these targets have been met, propelling Leicestershire up to the top of the recycling and composting table for a county partnership.

This is a fantastic achievement, made possible by the dedication of local authorities to quality service provision, and the hard work of residents. However, the challenge of meeting future targets is very real.

The review will allow the Partnership to ‘take stock’ of the current position and examine the options available going forward. In order to ensure a robust process, the review will follow Defra guidance, and undergo public consultation.

There are a number of key steps that must be completed and documents to be written, which along with the thirteen week consultation exercise, will culminate in a new version of the Strategy.

It’s hoped the revised strategy will continue as the basis for joint working in Leicestershire for many years to come.

As the review progresses, we'll add key documents to this page for you to download and read and host information on the public consultation.

The current version

The Leicestershire Waste Partnership has a clear vision for sustainable waste management, where we prevent waste from occurring, recycle and compost more and treat what remains before disposal. To achieve this, we have established objectives and policies which are detailed within the Leicestershire Municipal Waste Management Strategy 2006.
