Rooms in Strange Places

A series of “mock rooms” were set up in a range of public venues including a shopping centre, the side of a canal and a museum to raise awareness of reusing pre-owned furniture.Erin Foster, Leicestershire County Council, takes a break during the 'Rooms in Strange Places' event at Beacon Hill

A total of seven popular locations across Leicestershire including Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre, Leicester’s Botanical Gardens,  Blaby shopping precinct,  Foxton Locks, Snibston Discovery Museum, Beacon Hill Country Park and Melton Market featured the eye catching displays.

Organised by the Leicestershire Waste Partnership, which is made up of the county, district and borough councils, working along with a number of furniture re-use outlets and charities, the aim was to show people they can donate furniture they no longer need and prevent it being sent to landfill.

It is also hoped the initiative will highlight the fact that good quality second hand furniture is available from furniture reuse outlets and charity shops.

Furniture reuse project SOFA, which is based in Loughborough, provided the furniture, along with MIND which supplied smaller items and accessories.

Guy Jackson, Vice-Chairman of Leicestershire Waste Partnership, said: “Rooms in strange places is exactly what it says on the tin! We hope passers by will stop and take a second look at the displays which will be filled with items such as beds, drawers and bedside cabinets or coffee tables, shelving units or armchairs.

“Sofas, for example, are often expensive to buy new, but they can found in good condition at reasonable rates in furniture reuse outlets and charity shops across Leicestershire.

“By donating furniture people are not only helping someone else find a bargain, but are also reducing the amount of good quality reusable items they send to landfill.”

Jane Hammond, chief executive at SOFA, said: “On behalf of all Leicestershire’s furniture reuse projects we are really pleased to be able to support this initiative.

“It’s a great way of highlighting the wide range of good quality furniture and household items the reuse sector can offer to customers at truly affordable prices.”

Furniture Reuse projects

By donating your old and unwanted furniture to reuse organisations it can be given a new lease of life. It also gives volunteers the opportunity to learn new skills for employment including repair and restoration techniques.

Furniture reuse projects collect a wide range of household items and electrical appliances to pass onto people in need and people wanting second hand furniture.
