The best thing for the environment is to prevent waste from occurring in the first place, or reuse materials. Where we can't do this, we can recycle or compost.
Leicestershire has one of the highest recycling and composting rates in the Country. Residents can recycle waste through their kerbside collections, bring banks, or one of the many Recycling Household Waste Sites.

Levels of recycling in Leicestershire compare well with other counties, although we want to a increase our performance further. Leicestershire has a target to recycle and compost:
- 50% of municipal waste by 2010 (that's 10 years ahead of the national target)
- 58% of municipal waste by 2017
