Easter Packaging

Help us reduce packaging waste this Easter

Easter Slogan

Easter produces an extra 3,000 tonnes of waste in the UK every year (WRAP, 2009), which is mainly due to the excess packaging of chocolate Easter eggs. Last year the average chocolate egg only took up 40% of the volume of the packaging it was sold in (Easter Egg Packaging Annual Progress Report, 2009), highlighting how choosing an egg with reduced packaging will cut down on Leicestershire’s waste this Easter.

Some top tips to cut down your 'egg-cessive' waste this Easter:

Buy foil wrapped Easter eggs or bunnies rather than a boxed egg.

Choose an egg with reduced packaging, a smaller box or packaged with recyclable materials.

Make your own Easter eggs. Egg moulds are widely available and can be used year after year. Personalise your handmade chocolate eggs by decorating them with icing and ribbons! See our step by step guide below.

Hand painted eggshells, or homemade papier mâché eggs can be decorated with brightly coloured paints, felt-tips, glitter or recycled ribbons to make home made Easter gifts.

If you usually give gifts at Easter then think about giving a green Easter gift such as buying chickens for people in poverty-stricken countries.

To find our more about packaging waste and how to avoid excessively packaged items, why not visit one of our roadshows . In the run up to Easter we can be found at locations across the county, see the Events guide for more details.

Reducing Packaging is Not Just for Easter

It is important to remember that reducing packaging is not just for Easter. Many everyday household products such as cereals and frozen pizzas can be over packaged, look out for less waste options.

While snack and individual portion items can be more convenient they tend to contain more packaging. By buying in bulk and dividing into reusable containers when needed, packaging waste can be reduced.
