Setting up an Eco Committee
The Eco Committee is the driving force behind the waste certificate and any other environmental schemes carried out at your school. The Eco Committee can be an extension of an existing school council or gardening club for example.
The Eco Committee must include the following:

- Pupils chosen (or elected) to represent different year groups and the whole school
- A member of staff
The Eco Committee is also encouraged to include:
- Headteacher or a member of the senior management team
- Other teacher(s)
- Parent(s)
- Non-teaching staff member e.g. school secretary or lunch time supervisor
- Caretaker or site manager
The role of the Eco Committee is to:
- Ensure that the whole school is aware of the Waste Certificate programme
- Ensure that all sectors of the school community are represented in the decision-making process (as far as possible)
- Provide a link between pupils, teachers, senior management team, governors and the whole school community
- Take the lead in delivering the Waste Certificate Action Plan
- The size of the Eco Committee, where and how often it will meet is decided by each school.
- The committee must keep records of their decisions and the minutes of their meetings should be made available at senior school management team and governors meetings.
Once you have completed this section you are now ready to move onto the Waste Sort.
