Applying for the Waste Certificate

Once all of the previous sections of the Waste Certificate have been completed the Waste Education Officer will come out to the school to check that the Action Plan has been completed.

A second Waste Sort will be conducted to ensure that waste in school has been reduced. The criteria outlined below will be checked to ensure that the school has made adequate efforts to reduce its waste.

Establish the proportions of waste produced by your school

Task

Conduct a waste sort to establish what types of waste you are dealing with and to find out amounts and types of waste is going to landfill.

 

Monitor bins around the schools to check that materials which  can be recycled at the school are not being sent to landfill. Children in the school can act as bin monitors.

 

Reducing your Waste

Task Completed
Control resources such as paper, pencils, ink cartridges, pens and envelopes. Keep a log of how this is controlled.  
Try to purchase stationary products made from recycled materials where possible.  
Always print double sided, where appropriate  

Make sure that photocopying is double sided.

 

Use both sides of paper before it is recycled.

 
Reuse envelopes wherever possible. Have a place to store envelopes that can be reused  

Compost small amounts of paper. This is excellent for creating air pockets in your compost bin.

Create a sibling list so that only one letter is sent out per family where appropriate

 

Compost as much food as possible at lunch time and break time.

 
Have a Green Cone installed if suitable  

Reusing Waste

Task

Reuse items instead of throwing them away. Examples include:

Reuse yogurt pots for painting pots                                                                                                                                    

 

Reuse sweet tins for storage in the class room

 

Recycling Waste

Task Completed

Take part in a paper recycling.                                                                                                                                        

 

Take part in a Textiles collection scheme

 

Participate in recycling collections in your area.  

 

Get involved with printer cartridge recycling where possible.

 

Communication

Task Completed

Ensure that new schemes and practices are communicated with all staff and pupils. Try using posters, email's, school newsletters and assemblies.

 

Set up Eco Committee or incorporate environmental issues into the school council meetings.

 

Hold monthly meetings to discuss waste issues and to communicate any new projects. Minutes should be taken at these meetings and kept for reference.

 
Involve the pupils by asking them to design a poster to encourage them to recycle and compost their waste.  
Develop a procedure to check bins in each classroom and inform pupils and teachers when bins are contaminated. This may include giving house points or running a competition  
Create a notice board to post important information. Communicate to the school and parents that this notice boards exists.
