The Wormery can digest kitchen waste such as fruit and vegetables peelings and a small amount of paper and cardboard. The wormery takes time to establish and will start to work at its best once the worms are settled and breeding after a year.
Note: You can add small amounts of other kitchen wastes such as meat, fish, cooked leftovers, dairy products and bread, however this would require you to purchase specialist worms which are not included in the standard pack.
The wormery comes in a number of sections which, when stacked on top of each other create a number of layers through which the food waste will pass. The size is Width 50cm x Height 73cm. The food waste will be first placed in the top layer where it will start to be digested, as this happens the waste will move down the layers until the finished soil improver is ready for removal this is often referred to as "worm casts". The womery will not produce the large volumes of soil improver that a compost bin will produce, however it will produce a valuable liquid fertilizer which can be drained off using the tap at the base of the wormery and then used in the garden after it has been diluted (1 part to 10 parts water).
REMEMBER to drain the liquid off at regular intervals or your worms could drown!
Your wormery pack includes a number of sections which, when assembled, will form the wormery, an instruction leaflet, a voucher for your worms, a bedding block, 2Kg lime mix, 2Kg worm treat and a moisture mat.
You will need to site you womery in a shady location as worms cannot survive in high temperatures and work best when they are cool, and ideally the wormery should be situated on a flat area (grass or paved).
You need to return the voucher to the stated address and your free worms will be sent to you through the post. Your voucher entitles you to 500g (approx. 1000 worms) of standard compost worms which will be ideal for starting your wormery. Once your wormery is established after approximately one year you will have between 15,000 and 20,000 worms!
When you first add your worms you will need to provide them with a layer of bedding. The bedding can be made up from any of the following: Leaf mould, finished compost, shredded newspaper or cardboard, well rotted sawdust. Remember if you use newspaper or cardboard to make sure that it is damp as the worms will die if they dry out.
Finally after a couple of days once the worms have settled in you can start to add small amounts of food waste.
