Roughly a third of household waste in the UK is food waste, which produces harmful greenhouse gases such as methane when sent to landfill. Some household food waste can be put in your garden compost bin, but others foods are unsuitable and not everyone has a use for compost.
There are a number of alternatives to composting food or simply throwing it away.
The first step is always to try to prevent waste from occurring in the first-place The Leicestershire Waste Partnership is supporting a national campaign - Love Food Hate Waste, which aims to raise awareness about food waste and provide practical tips. This doesn't just help the environment, but it could save you money too!
You can find out more about the Love Food Hate Waste campaign on this site, or get great tips on how to reduce your waste on the official Love Food Hate Waste website.
Even after you've prevented all of the food waste you can, there may be some food scraps you couldn't avoid. Fruit and vegetable peelings can go in a regular compost bin, but other foods, such as dairy products and meat cannot. There are other solutions at hand, and what's more, Leicestershire residents can purchase them a discounted rates.
