National poultry day – March 19th

March 17, 2017

Today is the national awareness day for poultry. It’s a day to give thanks for chickens, turkey, ducks and other birds that we commonly farm for meat and / or eggs.

We certainly have a lot to be thankful for. Chicken is now the UK’s favourite meat, with an estimated 2.2 million eaten each day. Eggs are another favourite, with 34 million being consumed daily.

If you are planning on having an omelette or a chicken dinner this weekend, spare a thought for the amount of chicken, eggs and other poultry that goes to waste; it’s thought that the equivalent of 86 million chickens and 401 million eggs go into household bins every year. That’s enough food to feed every single person in the UK for more than two days.

Fortunately, Love Food Hate Waste have a selection of recipes and tips to help you make the most of your chicken, eggs and other poultry: www.lovefoodhatewaste.com
